Flint The creation of tools utilizing the natural environment is what distinguishes man from animal. What was once created using stone, wood, and bone has, over the centuries, evolved into metalworking and modern-day plastics. But it is the earliest tools, those carved from stone, which allowed mankind to conquer the natural environment and to prosper. Holding this flint arrowhead in our hand, delicately carved to a fine point thousands of years ago, we are holding the nascent breath of civilization.
Tools allowed mankind to utilize his natural setting to its fullest potential, to altar the surroundings to suite his needs, and to create his own collective habitats that would eventually evolve into great cities. An arrowhead head like this one, when tied securely to a wooden shaft, could have been used to fell a fleeing prey or to spear a fish.
As well, the delicate serrated edge could be used to cut and prepare the meat for cooking. This stone arrowhead represents the innate human drive to altar the environment, to innovate, and to conquer. It is in these earliest tools that we are able to witness the birth of civilization.

Chippendale To Franklin Orginally published There is a magic name in the world of furniture-so magic that even the furniture just made in the style for which he was famous is worth a fortune. His name is Thomas Chippendale. He has been called the greatest of all the world’s furniture makers. Today, if you can find anything in the “Chippendale” manner, if it is old enough and in fine enough condition, it can be worth a fortune.
Any Chippendale table is worth hundreds of dollars-and anything else that can be authenticated as Chippendale is worth a great deal. One woman, at least according to one story, found this out by trying to sell some old “junk. Part of it was Sheraton -and part of it was Chippendale! While you are gasping at the great amount she received for her old Chippendale and silver, do not forget the name of Sheraton, for this is another name in furniture which carries with it both magic and dollars for the finder.
Sheraton was the eighteenth-century furniture designer who never even owned his own shop. He did not even make a good living for himself. He was a jack of all trades: Perhaps that old piece of furniture which you found may be neither Chippendale nor Sheraton. It might be Hepplewhite!

The United States did not do much to occupy the land until , when Lieutenant Colonel Henry Leavenworth was ordered to establish a military post in the area. The following year, Colonel Josiah Snelling established a permanent fort at a blufftop site overlooking Pike Island and the confluence of the Mississippi and Minnesota Rivers.
The fort, first named Fort Saint Anthony and later Fort Snelling, became an island of civilization in the wilderness.
